Stress of Digital Life
In this digital world we live in where we are constantly connected to our jobs, family, and friends stress can be an issue for all us. Being connected is a great thing, but it also means we are constantly connected to the drama of our life. One of the best things you can do for yourself is disconnect every once in a while, and go enjoy the outdoors. Leave the cell phone at home, pack a nice lunch, some water and go have a relaxing day with nature.
Enjoying the Great Outdoors
One of the best ways to enjoy nature is to go day hiking. Not only is it great exercise, but it lets you re-connect with the environment and unplug from your life. Almost every city has parks with walking trails that are easily accessible and some are even handicap accessible. I love getting up on a Saturday morning, packing a lunch and snacks for the day and heading out to the woods. While you’re hiking, take in all the sounds, smells, and sights around you. Let the life forces that exist in nature envelop you and re-ground you. Stop along the trail and find a fallen tree to sit on and just be still and take in the peace and serenity that nature provides. Re-connecting not only helps you physically, but it is medicine for the soul and helps calm the stress in our lives. Clear your mind of all the things that are worrying you and truly become one with your surroundings.
Occasionally I will pack a blanket and find an open meadow and enjoy my lunch picnic style and then just lay and bask in the sun. The vitamin D that you will get from this will help you both mentally and physically. And of coarse our new line of lunch totes will keep your snacks cold on even the warmest of days :)
Hiking in Douglasville, Georgia
One of my favorite places to go day hiking is at Sweetwater Creek State Park outside Douglasville, Georgia. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and there are different trails for different fitness levels. My preferred part of the park is the creek that runs along the trails. I love to stop and just listen to the water rush over the large rocks that litter the creek and let my stress melt away. There is also an abundance of flowers, animals, and birds to enjoy, especially the butterflies. You can take the family and share a day enjoying the wildlife together. Maybe rent a canoe and go fishing while enjoying the sounds of the rushing water. Nothing helps a family re-connect then spending a day together disconnected from the world and having fun in the great outdoors. Of course a day with family would require you to pack a larger lunch so I suggest using something besides your usual day pack.
Bird Sanctuaries and Nature Preserves
If hiking is not your thing, another great way to enjoy nature is by visiting a nature preserve. These often have some kind of wildlife that is being preserved and is a great way to get away from everyday life. There is a nature preserve outside St. Louis, Missouri that has a bird sanctuary where you can stand just feet away from majestic bald eagles, many species of owls, and different types of other birds of prey. Also at the bird sanctuary they have shows where you can sit and watch different birds perform for the crowd. The best part of this park is most of it is drivable. You just sit in your car and drive around and view animals such as bison, elk, and moose. Another great feature of most nature preserves is they almost always have picnic areas. You can pack a nice lunch for yourself or pack a picnic lunch for you and your family. Some places even have pavilions and areas you can BBQ with the family. Seeing these incredible animals in a mostly free state is truly mesmerizing.
The Fairy-Tale of Nature
Nature is really incredible in the way it can help transform the way you not only feel about yourself, but how you view the world around you. If you spend enough time in the outdoors you start to notice little things more and more like the butterfly sitting on a flower or the way the trees wave in the wind. Nature is one big symphony of life that we are a part of if we let ourselves be. If we escape our lives and just be part of nature’s song it will bring you peace of mind, reduced stress, and much greater enjoyment of life. Take the time to go explore new places either by yourself or with family and friends and let the experience of enjoying nature work its magic.
